World Environment Day 2026: Now for Climate

Today, 5 June, the world marks World Environment Day under the motto #NowForClimate, a global call to act on climate change now. From the 1972 Stockholm Conference to the Paris Agreement, here is why this date matters and how BIO4COAT contributes to the transition.

What day is today?

Today, 5 June, is World Environment Day, one of the most widely celebrated environmental dates in the global calendar, observed in over 143 countries. But how did it come about?

It traces back to 1972, when the United Nations held the Conference of the Human Environment in Stockholm, the first major international summit to address the environmental impact of human activity. From that moment, every 5 June has been marked as World Environment Day. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) was also born from that same effort and remains to this day the global authority responsible for coordinating environmental action worldwide.

What is being celebrated?

Each year, World Environment Day focuses on a specific theme. In 2026, the spotlight is on climate action under the motto #NowForClimate, a global call to mitigate climate impacts, reduce environmental degradation and transform the systems that underpin our economies.

Why does it matter?

Because the numbers are hard to ignore. Did you know that:

  • Cities generate more than 70% of global emissions, and yet they are also leading some of the most innovative climate solutions.
  • Urban green infrastructure can cool cities by up to 4 ºC and reduce flooding.
  • Taking climate action now could prevent millions of deaths and trillions in economic losses by 2050.
  • Protecting forests helps avoid disaster losses worth tens of millions of dollars every year.
  • Solar and wind energy already outcompete coal in some markets.

What are institutions doing about it?

Since Stockholm, the global environmental agenda has been shaped by a series of key milestones: the Brundtland Report (1987), which introduced the concept of sustainable development; the Rio Earth Summit (1992); the Kyoto Protocol (1997); and the Paris Agreement (2015), which set the goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 ºC.

Today, the European Union has committed to climate neutrality by 2050 as part of the European Green Deal, while the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a global framework of 17 Sustainable Development Goals to guide action across governments, businesses and citizens alike.

Where does BIO4COAT fit in?

Coatings might not be the first thing that comes to mind on World Environment Day. But most conventional coatings are fossil-based, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and generating end-of-life challenges that are rarely considered at the design stage.
